In this operator spotlight we hear from Steve Unwin, Creative Producer at Clockwork Creative Productions, about the business and how AirShare supports the safety and success of their operations.
Tell us a bit about your business and your use of drones?
At Clockwork Creative we specialise in aerial drone imagery for the film and TV industries, both in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. Our flagship drone, the DJI Inspire 3, boasts an impressive 8K/75fps camera and can reach speeds of up to 94 kph. This allows us to capture a wide array of subjects, from dynamic vehicle pursuits to stunning landscapes, wildlife, and on-screen talent. As a certified Part 102 uncrewed aircraft operator, we collaborate closely with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), enabling us to operate beyond the standard Part 101 rules and deliver enhanced capabilities to our clients.
How do you ensure safety during your drone operations, and what are some of the biggest safety challenges you face?
Effective pre-flight planning and thorough hazard assessments, combined with adherence to CAA regulations and the use of the AirShare app, are crucial for ensuring safety during our drone operations. One of the primary challenges we encounter involves operating in uncontrolled or partially controlled public spaces. To address these challenges, we implement a range of measures designed to minimise risks and safeguard the public around our drone activities.
How do you see the role of drones evolving over the next five years, especially in your area of expertise?
Drones have undergone remarkable advancements in recent years, particularly in safety features, programmable flight capabilities, and camera payload options. Today, a significant portion of the film and TV content we enjoy incorporates stunning aerial shots captured by drones. This cost-effective approach enhances storytelling while elevating production value. Looking ahead to the next five years, I believe manufacturers will continue to develop increasingly sophisticated tools tailored for filmmakers, unlocking new creative and technical possibilities for the industry.
“AirShare enhances both the safety and success of our operations.”
How long have you been using AirShare to log your flights, and how many flights have you logged?
I’ve been using AirShare to log my drone flights for nearly six years now, and I’ve lost track of how many flights I’ve recorded in total. It’s become an indispensable part of my preflight preparation!
How has your use of AirShare supported the safety and success of your business?
We believe that AirShare enhances both the safety and success of our operations by ensuring we adhere to CAA regulations, navigate within secure airspace, and operate under the authority of Air Traffic Control.
What advice would you give to new drone pilots, around ensuring safe drone operations in New Zealand?
To support new drone pilots in ensuring safe operations in New Zealand, we encourage taking a moment to pause and reflect before each flight. Always utilise AirShare to check the airspace you plan to fly in; it will inform you of the safe flight limits, helping you avoid conflicts with other aircraft. Familiarise yourself with the CAA’s Drone 101 rules and commit to flying within those guidelines for a safer experience. Happy flying!
